Administrative History: The Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children, a private school chartered by the state of Pennsylvania in 1887, opened in a residential building in Pittsburgh in 1890 to serve blind children from the western part of the state. Originally called Western Pennsylvania Institution for the Blind, the school moved to a new school building in 1894. The name changed in 1922 to Western Pennsylvania School for the Blind, and circa 1954 to Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children. In the 1980s, the school began to focus on serving blind children with severe learning disabilities.
