Scope & Content: Holdings: 1839-1840, 1842, 1844-1860/1861, 1865-1866, 1870-1879, 1882, 1885-1886, 1897-1912/1913. Printed reports of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (Staunton) document the school's management, building, and student activities. Reports were not issued during the years of the Civil War when the school served as a military hospital. Reports include lists of the school's officers, staff, and students, and financial receipts and disbursements. Some reports prior to 1900/1901 include embossed raised-letter specimens. A copy of a lithograph of the original school building appears in most reports from 1853 to the 1870s. Black-and white photo illustrations appear in the 1899/1900 report and in later reports. Administrative History: The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind was established through an 1838 act of the Virginia state legislature. The school opened in Staunton, Virginia, in November 1839. From July 1861 until July 1865, the school was occupied as a military hospital during the Civil War. In 2009, the Virginia General Assembly established the school as a state agency with its own board of visitors independent of the Virginia Department of Education.
