Administrative History: Vacations and Community Services for the Blind was incorporated in 1926, under the name Vacation Camp and Dormitory for the Blind. The nonprofit agency opened a vacation camp in Rye, New York in that year, as well as a men's residence in New York City. In 1951, the vacation camp relocated to a 46-acre site in Spring Valley, New York. The name of the agency changed in 1955 to Vacation Camp for the Blind, and the dormitory service was discontinued. By the 1960s the agency was expanding its services to include consultations, referrals and volunteer aid, in addition to recreational programming, in the New York City area, and the name was changed in 1969 to Vacations and Community Services for the Blind (VCB). In 1984, VCB merged with the Center for Independent Living.
