Scope & Content: One video (2009.22.20) begins with Ed Berla', a professor in the Department of Special Education who worked as a research design consultant at APH from 1978-1992, presenting a 1996 session about the use of tactile illustrations, for a class on "Aspects of Visual Impairment." Most of the session appears on the video. This is followed by a November 19, 1996 session of "EDSP 626 - Education Procedures for Low Vision," a class that was headed by Ralph Bartley, then-superintendent of the Kentucky School for the Blind, with instructional material written by Mary Nelle McLennan and Hilda Caton, both with APH, and Edith Ethridge of the Kentucky School for the Blind. In this session, Bartley introduces the class, and Mary Nelle McLennan, then-director of APH Educational and Advisory Services, presents the session, which focuses on the teaching, use, and adaptation of tactile materials and teaching aids. Fred Otto, then-research associate with APH Educational Research, is a guest speaker. Most of the session appears on the video. The second video (2009.22.21) shows the complete November 26, 1996 session of EDSP 626 on assessment and teaching of daily and independent living skills. It features Mary Nelle McLennan and two guest speakers: Gary Mudd, then-director of the APH Public Relations Department; and, via phone, Sandra Lewis, an assistant professor at Florida State University.

Administrative History: Classes about assessment and instruction of visually impaired students were among the earliest distance-learning classes offered by the University of Louisville's Department of Special Education. Class sessions were broadcast live, via satellite, from the university every week. Students could phone-in and/or e-mail instructors during the program. Staff of the American Printing House for the Blind and the Kentucky School for the Blind participated in the development and presentation of some of these classes.
