Administrative History: The state legislature of Texas established the Asylum for the Blind in Austin in 1856. Classes were first conducted in a rented residence until a school building was erected in 1858. In the aftermath of the Civil War, the school was closed from June 1865 until November 1866. Referred to in school reports as the Texas Institution for the Education of the Blind and, later, the Texas Institute for the Blind, the school's name was officially changed to The Blind Institute in 1905 and, in 1915, to Texas School for the Blind. In 1917, the school moved to a new Austin campus, where it is still located today. In 1887, the state opened a separate school in Austin for the education of African-American students who were deaf or blind. The Institute for Deaf, Dumb and Blind Colored Youths would undergo several name changes, finally becoming the Texas Blind and Deaf School in 1965. That same year blind students of the school were integrated into the Texas School for the Blind. In 1989, the school was renamed Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
