Administrative History: The Tasmanian Institution for the Blind, Deaf and Dumb was established in 1887 to provide education and training to blind and deaf persons in Tasmania, Australia. Its services included a school department. In 1933, it was incorporated, and the name changed in 1949 to Tasmanian Institute for the Blind and the Deaf. Eventually the agency became the Royal Tasmanian Society for the Blind and Deaf, and, in 1987, its services were transferred to other independent organizations.
