Talking Book Topics [Text (large print); Sound recording]

Accession Number: 2014.23.1

Summary/Description: A single issue of the printed bimonthly magazine, distributed free of charge to borrowers of recorded books made available through the Library of Congress Talking Books program. Features an annotated list of the latest-released audio books (adult and children's nonfiction and fiction) available for loan on recorded discs and cassettes; a list of Talking Book magazines available on discs and open-reel tapes; brief general-interest articles; news about the program; and topical mini-bibliographies. Also includes a title index, fold-out order form, and two bound-in Eva-Tone soundsheets (one a recording, identical in content, of this issue; the other a recording of the issue's "Topics in Review: The Occult" bibliography of both recorded and braille books). The soundsheets are perforated for easy removal of the flexible discs. White paper cover with red print on the front; saddle-stitched; mailing label on reverse. A note to readers announces that beginning with the next issue the magazine will be sent in an envelope and contain the disc version only, with the print version available by special request and at a later date than disc issues.

History/Provenance: A flexible-disc version of the magazine was introduced in 1968 and was mailed as an insert with the print version until 1974. This issue was originally mailed to Mary Henson of Eddyville, Kentucky, according to the mailing label on reverse. It was found in a piano bench that had belonged to the donor's mother, who was not visually impaired and whose history of acquiring the issue is not known.
