Scope & Content: Institutional papers of the Society for Providing Evangelical Religious Literature for the Blind as found in the papers of the John Milton Society, which which SPERL merged in 1960. In 1874 William B. Wait, his son-in-law Frank Battles, and others in the Philadelphia area formed SPERL to produce Christian religious literature in accessible formats for blind readers. The society was chartered in 1879. Until 1913 most SPERL output was manufactured by the American Printing House for the Blind. The Society ceased all active production of literature around 1919, due to financial constraints, but continued to offer financial assistance to the American Bible Society and the John Milton Society until merging with the John Milton Society.
