Administrative History: In 1895, the state of South Dakota passed legislation to establish the South Dakota Blind Asylum. The school opened in Gary in 1900. The name would change to South Dakota School for the Blind (a request made by Superintendent Dora Donald, as reported in the 1900/1902 Biennial Report). The school relocated to Aberdeen, where it opened in a new building in 1961. The name was changed in 1970 to South Dakota School for the Visually Handicapped, and, in 1998, to South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
