Administrative History: The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB) was founded in 1849 by Rev. Newton Pinckney Walker and opened as a private school in Cedar Spring, Spartanburg County, with five deaf students. A Blind Department was added in 1855. SCSDB became a state school in 1856. The school closed intermittingly during Reconstruction, following the Civil War, and has operated continuously since 1876. A Colored Department for African-American children was opened in 1883; the school was integrated in 1967.
