Description: Set of twelve dessert spoons and one serving knife stored in the original hinged leather case. A genuine Roman coin is attached to the end of each spoon handle and to the knife handle, each coin is different. The letter "C" is stamped underneath each handle; the letter "H" has been etched in the top side of each spoon handle, near the coin. The bowls of the spoons are irregular in shape, and the hammer marks of the silversmith are used as a decorative element. The blade of the serving knife has the following inscription: "Mary J. Huntoon, From the employes [sic] of the KY. Inst. For the Blind. Thos. Lucas. Alex Lucas. Hannah Murphy. Kate Burke. Annie Kelly. Kate Henley. Annie Fahy. Mary Curry. Bridget Curry. Bridget Cain. Annie Cain." The case has brass slide catches. On the outside of the lid is an embossed image of a female wolf suckling Romulus and Remus. The word "ROMA" appears vertically to the right. The underside of the case is covered with cloth. A small paper tag is glued to the middle of the cloth, with handwritten inscription (partially obliterated) "Roma H Set Gf, AL." Interior of case is lined with pleated floral-print cloth; gripping blocks are beneath the lining. In the center of the cloth, inside of lid, is "George Wolf & Co., Louisville, Ky.," [probably the retailer] in gold letters. --appraisal record.
