History/Provenance: The Sensory Stimulation Kit (SSK), introduced in 1979, was developed by the American Printing House for the Blind to aid in the development of basic sensory processes of young visually impaired children and of visually impaired children with multiple disabilities. Sheri Bortner [Moore], APH Educational Research Department, served as the project director. In addition to the guidebook and activity cards, the kit included twenty-five items to provide auditory, tactile, visual, olfactory, and gustatory stimulation. The SSK was discontinued by 2007, with modalities of the kit available into 2009.
