Administrative History: The San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind (today known as LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired) descended from the San Francisco Reading Room and Library for the Blind, which was founded in 1902. The Reading Room changed its name to San Francisco Association for the Blind (SFAB) in 1914 and offered vocational training and employment to blind and visually impaired residents of Northern California. In 1958, SFAB merged with Recreation for the Blind, another non-profit agency located in San Francisco, to become the San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind (SFLB), and services and programs continued to expand.
