Scope & Content: Printed annual reports of the Royal Glasgow Asylum for the Blind, documenting management, building and student activities for years ending 1889-1922 (presented in January 1890-1923). Reports include financial statements and illustrations. Holdings are incomplete; see container list. With this collection, there are also two separately printed "Statements of the Arrangements of the Asylum for the Blind, Glasgow," printed in 1843 and 1844, 8th and 9th editions respectively; the former contains an appendix with the 16th and 17th annual reports for years ending 1842 and 1843, and the latter contains the 17th annual report. Both include embossed raised-letter specimens produced at the institution and illustrations.

Administrative History: The Royal Glasow Asylum for the Blind was founded in Scotland by John Leith, who died in 1804 and bequeathed funds to establish the charitable institution. Originally called the Asylum for the Blind, it was incorporated in 1825 and offered a school for blind children, as well as vocational training and employment of blind adults.
