Administrative History: The Royal Blind Asylum and School was established in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1793 by the Rev. Dr. Johnstone. Originally called the Edinburgh Asylum for the Industrious Blind, it was the first institution of its kind in Scotland, offering vocational training and employment of blind adults, as well as a school for blind children.
