Description: Tactual assessment test developed to predict braille reading readiness of blind students at the first grade level. "The task for the student taking the test is to find the piece of sandpaper on each card which feels different from the others" --APH product sheet. A complete kit consisted of: two sample cards and sixty-nine individually numbered testing cards of rectangular-shaped white cardboard, each containing a mounted row of four (2 x 2 inch) gray or black sandpaper squares, three of identical coarseness or roughness and one different; twenty-five printed self-scoring answer sheets with numbers corresponding to the card numbers; and a printed "Roughness Discrimination Test Manual," by Carson Y. Nolan and June E. Morris of APH, containing directions for administering the test, which "may be given by any sighted teacher," data from APH studies contributing to the development of the kit, and bibliographic references. APH product number for entire kit: 1-0352. Accessioned kit is incomplete, containing 56 testing cards (one has the number 13 handwritten in ink at bottom front left corner, the remaining have blue ink-stamped numbers in the same location and are numbered 14-62, 64-69; on the reverse of every card are ink-stamped numbers indicating the grit of the sandpaper squares, with the exception of card 36 which has handwritten numbers in ink); 15 answer sheets; and the manual. Cards are stored in the original cardboard kit box, with ivory-colored exterior, that features a flip top lid, thumb cutout, and a white label on one end with printed text: "Roughness Discrimination Test."
