Administrative History: The state of Rhode Island established a Bureau for the Blind in 1930 to provide employment programs and social services to blind residents of the state, and to maintain a census of those residents. Later a full-range of rehabilitative and social services would be offered to both blind and visually impaired persons. The name would change to Services for the Blind and, circa 1976, to Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
