Description: Relief picture produced by Martin Kunz for instruction of blind students; may be a part of his Naturkunde [Natural History] series. "M. Kunz" and "Illzach" are embossed in German braille at bottom. Picture shows three fish: the needlefish (upper left), the eel (center), and the electric eel (bottom). Braille labeling provides the common name for each fish in German and French. Backside of each eel is lightly filled with gesso. Slight cracking along portions of the raised edges of the fish. Museum has several of Kunz' relief pictures and maps in its collection. Martin Kunz was director of the Blind Institute at Illzach, Germany and a leading producer of relief pictures and maps in the 1890s. --Tactile Pictures (Eriksson, 1998, p. 107).
