Relief maps of Sweden

Map

Accession Number: 1998.80.111

Scope & Content: Twenty pages of maps of Sweden gathered in a plain brown paper cover that is reinforced with burgundy cloth tape along the spine. All maps have a raised line border. Each map has a braille heading in Swedish; latitude and longitude are noted in braille along map border; no labelling on the mapped areas; major cities are denoted by large raised dots; landmass is smooth with small raised dotted coastlines; large bodies of water have depressed dotted surfaces; raised x's mark Sweden's land borders; raised lines of dots and dashes are used for further detail. The maker is not identified, but is attributed to Harald Thilander, a Swedish printer, who was blind himself, of maps and other braille publications for the blind during the 1930s. His maps are described in Tactile Pictures (Eriksson, 1998, pp. 182-183). The maps are similar in design to accession 1992.391.
