Description: Head-and-shoulders photograph; glossy black-and-white. A smiling Aschcroft, dressed in a suit and tie, is holding a pair of eyeglasses in his right hand, which rests against his chin. In 2002, Ashcroft was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Leaders and Legends in the Blindness Field. His long career in the field included serving as the first director of the Department of Educational Research at the American Printing House for the Blind.

History/Provenance: Samuel Ashcroft served as director of Educational Research at the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) from 1953-1957. Prior to that position, he had been principal of the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School. Later positions would include Professor, Department of Special Education at University of Maryland; Director, National Center on Educational Media and Materials for the Handicapped at Ohio State University; and Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, Nashville. Ashcroft also served as national president of the International Council for Exceptional Children, 1970-71, and founding president of the Foundation for Exceptional Children, 1971. He was a delegate to the White House Conference on Children in 1970 and the founder of SCALARS Publishing. Photo belonged to Samuel C. Ashcroft and was donated to the APH Museum by his daughter in 2006.
