Administrative History: In 1984, the American Printing House for the Blind began using the PEARL (Plate Embossing Apparatus for Raised Lines), a machine for embossing raised lines on metal (zinc) printing plates for the production of tactile graphics. The machine was designed by Gary Davis, who worked as a mechanical engineer and designer in the company's research department.
