Administrative History: The Oregon School for the Blind opened in Salem on February 26, 1873, resulting from an 1872 act of the Oregon state legislature that provided funding for its establishment. The school closed temporarily from May 1879 until April 1883, then reopened in a rented building on 12th Street. It moved in 1894 to a newly constructed building located at Church and Mission streets. This building was replaced by new construction in 1956. Originally known as the Oregon Institute for the Blind and later as the Oregon State School for the Blind, in 2007 it became known as the Oregon School for the Blind. The state closed the Oregon School for the Blind in 2009, due to financial reasons and a desire to have students attend their local public schools.
