Scope & Content: Holdings: 1837-1891, 1894-1896, 1898-1900, 1902-1913, 1934-1939, 1941-1944, 1946-1951, 1953, 1955-1962, 1964-1976. Reports of the Ohio State School for the Blind, documenting the school's management, building, and student activities. Reports include financial statements and include a list of students. Reports were not printed for the years ending 1914-1933, and 1963. A specimen of raised-line embossing is the frontispiece for the 1843 report. Several reports of the 1840s-1880s have an illustration of the school building; black-and-white photo illustrations appear in the1898 and 1909 reports. A "Report of the Centennial Celebration of the School" is included in the 1937 report, and a "Year Book" is in the reports for years ending 1937-1962. Administrative History: The Ohio State School for the Blind, originally known as the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind, was established by the state of Ohio in 1837 and opened that same year in Columbus. It was the first public school for blind students in the United States. In 1953, the school moved to its current Columbus location on North High Street.
