Administrative History: Winifred and Edith Holt founded their "Light House No. 1" in 1905, to offer community-based services to blind and visually impaired persons. The Lighthouse, incorporated in 1906 as the New York Association for the Blind, established an adult workshop, as well as a summer camp for children, in 1912. And, in 1933, founded the first non-residential nursery school in the United States for blind children. In 1989, the New York Association for the Blind became The Lighthouse Inc.
