Administrative History: The Metropolitan Society of the Blind was established in 1961 in Detroit, Michigan, as a non-profit organization to provide services to blind and visually impaired persons in the metropolitan Detroit area. Among the services offered were vocational rehabilitation, training in independent living skills, and referral services, as well as consultative services and training for staff of community agencies and educational institutions. In 1970, it merged with the Detroit Society for the Prevention of Blindness to become the Greater Detroit Society for the Blind (GDSB).
