Description: Prototypes of picture overlays and plastic shapes for a Light Box Materials kit being developed by the American Printing House for the Blind; purpose of kit to teach visual perception skills to visually impaired children functioning at an age level of 3 to 5. Prototype materials include the following: Eight object overlays of clear flexible plastic (6 x 6 inches), each with a single picture on it made from vinyl film (green balloon, purple and black-striped ball, yellow crayon, yellow fork, blue mug, red pants, blue button-down shirt, red sock) and outlined in a raised line of black paint(?). Two test sheet overlays of flexible opaque plastic (8.5 x 11 inches); one has two black, horizontal lines across the center and is marked "Test Sheet #1"; the other has two black, horizontal lines across the center and is marked "Test S #2." One background overlay sheet of clear flexible plastic (9 x 8 inches), mostly blacked-out leaving a pattern of clear quarter-inch circles. One template of semi-rigid black plastic (8.5 x 8.5 in.) featuring a 6 x 7 grid of half-inch square cutouts. Twenty-nine manila envelopes (9.5 x 6.5 inches) with unsealed flaps in which are organized plastic, hand-held size geometric shapes; sticks; pegs; tiles; small colored picture cards (plastic overlays); and small outline cards (plastic overlays). Each envelope is marked on the outside with a unique number and has a handwritten list of contents on the front (envelope #9 is missing 2 sticks; envelope #14 is missing two rhombuses; #16 is missing 3 shape cards: rhombus, oval, and isosceles triangle; and envelope #29 is missing 1 yellow equilateral triangle). Total contents of the envelopes is listed below, with a count of each item in parentheses: Acrylic geometric shapes (some clear and some opaque): diamonds (9), rhombuses (2), squares (8), circle (1), half circles (2), isosceles triangles (7), equilateral triangles (25). Acrylic pegs: triangular (3), square (1), mosaic (16), cylindrical (5). Acrylic tiles (39). Flat black plastic shapes (semi-rigid): circles (14), triangle (1), squares (4). Sticks, peg-type (1 wood, 8 plastic). Colored shape cards (clear plastic overlays, each featuring a picture of a shape made from color vinyl film): ovals (16), rhombuses (13), squares (4), isosceles triangles (2), equilateral triangles (3), obtuse triangle (1), and hearts (9).
