Scope & Content: Single-page letter is handwritten in ink. Silas Brown is requesting $1130 to pay Joseph Akin for plumbing and carpentry work completed on the building of the New York Institution for the Blind (now called the New York Institute for Special Education). A receipt marked "Duplicate" appears at the bottom of the page. Reverse is addressed, dated July 18, 1849, and has a New York City postmark. Page has creases from folding; 1-inch section has been cut out at center right; small dark stain and hole at bottom right.
