Administrative History: The Kansas State School for the Blind was established and opened in 1867, in Wyandotte, which later became part of Kansas City. The name of the school changed from Asylum for the Blind to Kansas Institution for the Education of the Blind in 1877, and to Kansas State School for the Visually Handicapped in 1969. During the Kansas Legislative Session of 1992, the official name became Kansas State School for the Blind.
