Administrative History: The Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School was founded in 1852, when Samuel Bacon started a private school for blind students in Keokuk, Iowa. In 1853, it became state-supported and was established as the Asylum for the Instruction of the Blind, in Iowa City, with Bacon as its superintendent. The school moved to Vinton in 1862. The name of the school changed several times over the years: Institution for the Instruction of the Blind (1855), Iowa Institution for the Education of the Blind (1860), Iowa College for the Blind (1872), Iowa School for the Blind (1929), and Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School (1951).
