Scope & Content: Printed reports of the Institution for the Chinese Blind, Shanghai, documenting the school's management, student, and building activities. Reports include financial statements and an illustration in simbraille of the Mandarin Braille Code. Black-and-white photo illustrations are in all but the 1931 report; a Register of Pupils is in the 1915/1916 report. Reports for 1931 and 1934/1935 are in both English and Chinese. Administrative History: The Institution for the Chinese Blind was founded in 1911 by John Fryer. It was established as a private school and opened in a rented house in Shanghai in November 1912, with Fryer's son, George B. Fryer, serving as superintendent. A building was constructed for the school and opened in 1915. The name of the school was later changed to Shanghai School for the Blind.
