Administrative History: In 1887, the state of Illinois appropriated funds for the establishment of the Illinois Industrial Home for the Blind, to provide both a residence and employment for adult blind men and women of the state. The Home opened in Chicago in January 1895. Brooms, chair caning, and wire hat frames were among the articles manufactured in its factory.
