Administrative History: The New York Institute for Special Education was founded in 1831 and originally called the New York Institution for the Blind. The private, non-profit school was first located in Manhattan and moved, in 1924, to a new campus located on Pelham Parkway in the Bronx. The name of the school changed in 1912 to New York Institute for the Education of the Blind, and again in 1986 to New York Institute for Special Education to better reflect the variety of services offered.
