Scope & Content: The handbill advertises the March 31st, 1864 exhibition by students of the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind before the Pennsylvania Legislature. Held at 7:30 p.m., the exhibit included musical performances and "Explanations of the System of Instruction--Reading the Raised letters--Exercises on the Slate and Globe--Writing Pin type--Exhibition of useful and fancy articles made by the Pupils, etc., etc." The student-made articles were also sold at the close of the exhibit.

Administrative History: The Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind, today known as Overbrook School for the Blind, opened in 1832. William Chapin was the principal at the time of this exhibition, which was held to show the state Legislature the accomplishments made possible through state appropriations.
