Administrative History: Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc., a non-profit organization, was founded in 1942 and began its dog-guide training program in Los Gatos, California. The organization, which was incorporated in 1943, initially provided dog guides free-of-charge to U.S. veterans blinded in World War II. Soon after, the same service was offered to blind civilians. In 1947, the organization moved to San Rafael, California.
