Administrative History: APH began researching the use of the APH Aural Study System in the mid 1970s a source for a high school level dictionary and a thesaurus, both on vinyl disk and cassette. Problems developing suitable phonographs associated with a related recorded encyclopedia project (arising from budget concerns associated with the recession) caused the shelving of the disk dictionary project as well in 1974-75. Experimental recordings were used to prepare cassettes to research indexing techniques with adult users, and to test needs and uses for dictionaries. Details of the project are contained in the annual reports of the Educational Research, Development, and Reference Group, 1974-1976. In 1975, recorded material from the Thorndike-Barnhart Junior Dictionary were used in a media comparison study led by June Morris to compare the time and accuracy for the location of dictionary entries when provided on cassette, braille, and large type.
