Description: The Mechanische Werkstatt fur Blindenhilfsmittel was the manufacturing arm of the Deutsche Zentralbücherei für Blinde in Leipzig, East Germany after WWII. Paul Georgi, a WWII veteran, became director of the Werkstatt in 1961. Oscar Picht, an instructor at the school for the blind in Berlin, invented an upward writing braillewriter in 1899. His design was improved by several German manufacturers throughout the 20th century and became the most popular European braillewriter. This miniature version was marketed in the Maxi-Aids catalog as the Erika Picht Mini Brailler in the early 1990s for $250, but the Mechanische Werkstatt had been out of business since German Reunification in 1990.
