Administrative History: The Dyker Heights Home for Blind Children was established by the International Sunshine Society in 1904 in New York City to provide a home, care, and services to blind babies and children of the state of New York. It was maintained by the International Sunshine Branch for the Blind, which was separately incorporated in 1905, and moved the following year to Dyker Heights, in Brooklyn, New York. A kindergarten was opened at the Home in 1907, under the control of the New York City Board of Education, and was the first public kindergarten for blind children in the United States.
