Summary/Description: Senate Document no. 89, dated April 7, 1864, includes the following two reports concerning treatment of students at the New York Institution for the Blind: "Report of the Committee on Charitable and Religious Societies, and the Testimony Taken by Them in Relation to the Affairs of the New York Institution for the Blind," February 27, 1864, a transcript of the sworn testimony of several students, school employees (including William B. Wait, Superintendent), and school suppliers provided during the committee's investigation into student complaints of "ill proper treatment, neglect, and inefficiency" by school personnel, pages 1-203; and "Report of the Committee. In the Matter of the petitions of the pupils of the New York Institution for the Blind, the Committee on Charitable and Religious Societies," April 9, 1864, which includes the petitions and a circular signed by the students, the findings of the committee, and its recommendations, pp. 204-221.
