Diorama of monks using a printing press

Diorama

Accession Number: 2003.185.68

Description: The diorama shows painted plaster figures of two monks setting up a printing press and using a type frame, also made of wood. A plaster base is painted to look like a stone floor. The background is a stone wall with a cathedral-shaped window painted on cardboard. The diorama is displayed in a wood case, painted black, with a top-hinged lid that can be propped open, and is viewed through a front glass-enclosed opening. "WPA Kentucky Museum Project" is inscribed in a shield design on the front left of the case. The back panel of the case is hinged at the bottom and fastens at the top with a metal hook. A small portion of a paper label with black lettering remains glued to the top of the lid, with "D-1" printed on it. A Kentucky School for the Blind property label with number 107195 is attached to the top left of the case. Diorama was made by Works Progress Administration employees as part of a museum education project and was used at the Kentucky School for the Blind.
