Administrative History: The Columbia Institution for the Deaf, Dumb, and Blind was incorporated in 1857 in Washington, D.C. In 1865, the blind students were transferred to the Maryland Institution for the Blind. Columbia was renamed the Columbia Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, and would become Gallaudet University.
