History/Provenance: Book was purchased from the publisher by the Museum of the American Printing House for the Blind. Andrew Cowan enlisted in the Union Army in 1861 and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel by the end of the Civil War. He moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 1866, where he became a founding partner of a wholesale hardware, leather and mill supply business. In addition to his service on the APH Board of Trustees, he served for eight years on the Board of Visitors of the Kentucky School for the Blind and was an active member of military and civic organizations.
