Carte de visite of a young blind woman

Description: Sepia-toned photo of a young well-groomed woman wearing dark eyeglasses. Photo is mounted on card stock. On the center back of the carte de visite is printed "A. Hickcox, No. 77 Court Street, Bingham, N.Y." Hickcox was a well known photographer in that area during the Civil War era. --vendor's correspondence. Handwritten in pencil on the back top edge is "Miss H Squires, Ch Forks" [Chenango Forks, NY]. The carte de visite was popular in the United States circa mid-1850s. Two very small areas of discoloration (foxing) on photo. The woman may be Jane Squires who attended the New York Institution for the Blind from 1848-1852 and 1856-1860, according to the school's annual reports for those years. A. Hickcox may be Ambrose Hickcox who was a daguerreian in Corning, NY, circa 1859.
