Description: Sepia-toned photo is mounted on a white card. Photo shows a blind man with tinted eyeglasses. He is seated in an ornate wooden chair, reading a book with his right hand. The book rests on a small wooden table. Behind him, to the right, appears to be a backdrop illustration of a bookshelf. He is wearing a dark 3-piece suit with long jacket. He has a full beard, but no mustache. "By Starbuck" is printed in the bottom margin at left. "Alford" is printed in bottom margin at right. On the back, at center, is printed "Sam. S. Starbuck, Portrait & Landscape Photographer, Alford." At bottom is printed "The Negative preserved, Copies may always be had. Painting, drawings, and all other works of art copied." Faded; soiled. Cartes de visite were popular during the Civil War era.
