Administrative History: J. Robert Atkinson, who became blind as an adult, founded the Universal Braille Press (UBP) in Los Angeles, California, in 1919. A philanthropic organization established to produce braille materials, UBP was incorporated as the Braille Institute of America (BIA) in 1929. The non-profit organization continues to produce braille and offers a variety of additional services and programs for blind and visually impaired adults and children through its regional centers in Southern California.
