Book of Toys, sample

Book, Activity

Accession Number: 2019.9.18

Description: A sample of a "Book of Toys," made by following instructions and patterns found in "Instructions for Making Tactual Readiness Books" (copyright 1988), a part of the Patterns Prebraille Program kit of the American Printing House for the Blind. 10 sheets of cardboard (11 x 11 inches) are each covered on one side with a piece of fabric, stitched in place along the edges, to create a fabric-covered front cover, back cover, and eight pages for the tactile book. Each fabric piece differs in material type, texture, pattern and/or color. Eight large pockets, ranging in size from 5 x 6.5 inches to 9 x 8.5 inches and cut in different shapes from different fabrics, are stitched around the edges to the front of the fabric pages, one pocket per page. The cover and pages are stitched together in pairs, back to back (front cover to first page, second page to third page, and so on in order to the last page and back cover), and the entire volume is hole-punched along the left edge and comb-bound (white plastic). The title of the book is handwritten along the comb-binding in black marker. Various children's toys, each small enough to fit easily into a child's palm, are inserted into all but one of the pockets of the completed book and include, in page order, a rubber ball in the purse-shaped, red corduroy pocket with buttoned flap; a heart-shaped, plastic finger-ring in the multicolor striped drawstring pocket; a fabric doll in the open-top, brown vinyl pocket; a string of round plastic beads in the house-shaped, red corduroy pocket with front zipper; a plastic railroad car in the triangular shaped, terry-cloth pocket with front zipper; no toy in the open-top, plaid wool pocket; three plastic pigs in the pig-shaped, red felt pocket with front zipper; and a plastic boat in the open-top, multicolor striped patch pocket.
