Administrative History: The Arizona State School for the Deaf and the Blind was established in Tucson in 1912, as a department of the University of Arizona. By 1922, the growing school had relocated to a more spacious location at West Speedway. In 1929, it became a public school independent of the university. The school's blind and deaf departments are today the Arizona School for the Blind and the Arizona School for the Deaf and comprise the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (ASDB).
