2021 Summer Museum Internship 

Duration: Ten (10) weeks beginning Tuesday June 1 and concluding Friday, August 13, 2021

The internship will provide a broad perspective on museum work, both collections preservation and public interpretation.  Behind the scenes, the intern will work with the museum’s newly acquired American Foundation for the Blind Helen Keller Archive.  Primary tasks will be rehousing and inventorying archival and photographic collections. The intern will be trained on the use of state-of-the-art digitization equipment and use it to digitize materials as assigned.  In addition, the intern will provide guided tours of both the museum and production areas of the American Printing House for the Blind.

Requirements

Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student in the humanities, public history or related field with an interest in museums and/or disability history. Candidate must be detail oriented, careful with historic materials, and interested in alternative formats for archival materials. Candidate must be good with the public, capable of memorizing interpretive material, and responsible. Preference will be given to candidates earning academic credit for the internship.

About the Museum

The American Printing House for the Blind was founded in 1858 and today serves the nation with a wide variety of products and services dedicated to the education of people who are blind or visually impaired.  Founded in 1994, the Museum of the American Printing House for the Blind creates encounters with artifacts, images, and ideas that engage people with the history of literacy and learning for people who are blind or visually impaired and the role of the American Printing House for the Blind; changing their minds, attitudes, and actions.
