Connect the Dots 2024
Embark on an adventure of discovery into the playful world of Connect the Dots—an educational series that turns the history and innovation of blindness and low vision into an exciting adventure for kids! We’re on a mission to make learning a blast and inspire a world of inclusivity so while our building is under renovation, the PNC Foundation is helping us bring our knowledge out into the community. Over the next two years, in partnership with Louisville Free Public Library, Connect the Dots, powered by PNC Foundation, aims to inspire children through an accessibility mindset, encouraging everyone to ponder ways to create a more inclusive world.

Happy Birthday Louis Braille!
At this event, families are introduced to Louis Braille, kid inventor, and his tactile code of six-dot-cells which is still used worldwide by people who are blind to read and write.

Light & Shadow
Often, when we consider blindness, we might picture total darkness. But this is not always accurate. People who are blind or low vision may be able to see some light, colors, and/or shapes. Everyone sees things differently! At this event, families will discover the science of sight, learn from local community members who are blind or low vision about how they see, practice visual attention, and learn about tools like light boxes, magnifiers, and high-contrast text/images which provide access to everyday information.

Being blind is not about what people can’t do – it’s about what they can do! Instructors of this workshop, who are blind, will demonstrate how they read and the technologies that empower them.

Under the direction of blind athletes and health professionals, families and friends will learn about the intersections of disability and play before exploring accessible recreation technology and popular paralympic sports.

How do people who are blind do math?
Instructors of this workshop, who are blind, will demonstrate how they do math and what tools empower them. Getting hands on with both ancient and modern technology, children will discover tools that everyone can use to make sense of math.

Touch & Texture
For many museum visitors of all ages, whether blind or sighted, being able to interact with objects through touch is a memorable and unique experience. “Make-it-touchable” is the approach The Dot Experience at APH is taking to make the most accessible museum in the world.Through hands-on play, children and adults will learn about the science of touch and texture, discover the ways APH has historically and currently used tactile graphics to provide access to education, experience using a white cane, weave a community art piece, and explore ways touch and texture will provide visitors access to the collections and exhibits within The Dot Experience, opening 2026.

Sound & VibrationSome people who are blind or low vision access school, work, entertainment, and daily life by engaging their sense of hearing. Getting hands on with high-tech and low-tech devices, families can explore the science of vibration and sound with blind and sighted leaders from the American Printing House for the Blind.
